As many of your either wrapping up your school year or else modifying your academic schedule due to the summer, it may be a good time for your kiddos to learn to type if they do not know how. My older two learned on the free typing program from the BBC called Dance Mat Typing.
I tried several programs and this was the most enjoyable for my kids. I believe they learned when they were around 6 years old. They will not be super speedy typists at the end as it is not as lengthy as some others. However, they will be using the proper hand positioning of the home row keys and will just get faster with experience. If someone else used another program their kids loved then share it here. After completing it, there are many ways to encourage your kids to type including emailing their friends and family. My kids have a strong preference for typing over handwriting. Me too!
My daughter uses a Hewlett-Packard Chromebook that we purchased from Amazon for only $160 that works splendidly for her school work. At 11.6 inches, it is the perfect weight and size for her hands to type and do her school work.
